Best one-time purchase dictation apps for Mac
Seven dictation apps with a pay-once option, ranked by what the one payment gets you.
VoiceInk is our top pick for most people: $25 for one Mac, lifetime updates, local transcription by default, per-app Modes and open source. Pepys Dictate is the lowest price at $9.99, with no account. Pay more only for what you need, such as Windows or phone apps.
How we ranked them
- Total one-time price for one Mac, and for the number of devices the licence covers.
- What the payment includes: updates, features and devices, as the vendor's own pages state them.
- Where speech recognition runs, because that decides whether the app works offline.
- Refund terms and whether there is a free plan or trial before you pay.
- Fit: who each app suits best, including readers who should pick an app below ours.
Pepys Dictate is our app. We ranked all seven apps on the same criteria, using facts read from each vendor's own pages on 2026-10-05, and we list cons for every app, ours included. Dictate has the lowest price here but ranks second, because VoiceInk adds per-app Modes and published source code for $15 more. The order is by what one payment covers (devices, updates, refund terms), not by price alone: Superwhisper ranks above Unspoken because one licence covers all its devices and it has a free plan and a 30-day refund.
1. VoiceInk
Best for: Mac users who want per-app Modes and open source for a low one-time price
VoiceInk sells three lifetime licences on its pricing page: Solo at $25 for one Mac, Personal at $39 for up to two, and Extended at $49 for up to three. All include lifetime updates, and speech recognition runs locally by default.
Pros
- Its pricing page states no subscriptions and lifetime updates on every licence.
- Modes switch the transcription model, language, AI prompt and output per app, website or shortcut.
- Source code is public on GitHub under GPL v3, and Ollama can run text cleanup locally.
- A 14-day money-back guarantee, though its Terms require a valid reason and uninstalling from all devices.
Cons
- No permanent free plan: a 7-day trial, or you build the app yourself from the GitHub source.
- Minimum macOS differs by page: 14.4 on its website, 15.0 in the GitHub README.
- Cloud transcription and AI enhancement are optional, and send audio or text to the provider whose API key you add. Provider charges are separate.
- Apple silicon only, and its optional on-device Apple Speech model needs macOS 26.
2. Pepys Dictate(our app)
Best for: Anyone who wants the lowest one-time price and clean text, with no account
Pepys Dictate Pro is $9.99 once, plus tax where applicable, not a subscription, with unlimited words on up to 3 Macs. Speech recognition and formatting run on your Mac, with no account.
Pros
- A free plan of 2,000 words a week and a 7-day trial of everything, so you can test it before you buy.
- Understands spoken corrections ('Friday, no wait, Monday' becomes 'Monday'), formats lists and numbers, and removes filler words.
- Personal dictionary, per-app styles, polished mode and tones, and a higher-accuracy model stay on with Pro.
- A free licence for people who need dictation because of an injury or disability: email contact@pepys.co.
Cons
- Mac only: no Windows, iPhone, iPad or Android.
- Needs an Apple silicon Mac and macOS 13 or later.
- Dictation covers 25 languages, and smart formatting works in English, German, French and Spanish.
- No meeting notes, file transcription or team features.
3. MacWhisper
Best for: People who also transcribe files and record meetings
MacWhisper Pro is EUR 64 per licence, one-time, with lifetime updates, per its homepage. It is mainly a file and meeting transcription app, and dictation is one feature among many.
Pros
- The free tier includes system-wide Whisper dictation, so you can try it before paying.
- Pro records meetings without a bot and adds speaker recognition. Its homepage also lists subtitle and many other export formats.
- Transcription is local by default, works offline, and supports 100 languages.
- A command-line tool, webhooks, and forwarding to Notion, Zapier, Obsidian or n8n.
Cons
- Dictation is secondary: spelling and grammar cleanup and per-app prompts are Pro and need your own AI key or a local model.
- The homepage offers refunds if you contact the vendor within 7 days of purchase, detailing your concerns.
- System-wide dictation exists only in the direct-download version, not the Mac App Store build.
- Its homepage shows EUR 64 and its Gumroad page EUR 65, and neither lists a USD price.
4. Voibe
Best for: People who want a lifetime licence that also covers a Windows PC
Voibe Dictation is $149 per seat, once, per its pricing page as read on 2026-10-05, with unlimited usage. One seat covers one active Mac plus a Windows PC.
Pros
- On Apple silicon you can choose fully on-device transcription, which works offline with AI formatting turned off.
- A 30-day no-questions-asked refund guarantee on every plan.
- Cleanup covers punctuation, filler removal, numbers, dates, URLs, smart lists and spoken commands.
- A bot-free meeting-notes tier, Voibe Work, runs on Mac and costs $349 once.
Cons
- No permanent free plan, only a 7-day trial, and it needs macOS 14.4 or later.
- Optional AI text formatting sends finished text to a cloud model, and Intel Macs and Windows use cloud transcription only.
- Not open source: its source code is in private repositories.
- Its pricing changed while we researched it (an earlier version showed $59 a year), so recheck the pricing page before you buy.
5. Superwhisper
Best for: People who need one licence across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
Superwhisper Pro is $249.99 once, per its billing docs, and one licence covers all devices. Subscriptions are $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, and every plan has the same features.
Pros
- The Free plan keeps unlimited local Whisper dictation, so the lifetime licence is optional.
- Runs on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with coding-agent integrations on macOS.
- A 30-day refund window. Its refund page covers lifetime purchases, though it opens by describing a subscription basis.
- An Enterprise tier adds SAML SSO and SCIM, with a SOC 2 report available under NDA.
Cons
- $249.99 is the second-highest one-time price for a dictation licence on this list.
- The lifetime plan is in its billing docs, but its homepage pricing card does not show it, so confirm before you buy.
- Needs macOS 14 or later, and local models run well mainly on Apple silicon.
- AI modes, cloud models and file transcription need Pro; Free allows two modes without AI processing.
6. Unspoken
Best for: People who want fully offline dictation and accept a higher price
Unspoken Lifetime is $190 once on its homepage, with one year of updates and then an optional $29 a year. Its terms list the same plan in euros and say up to 3 devices.
Pros

- A personal dictionary, text snippets and Smart Modes for email, code and chat.
- A subscription alternative at $8 a month or $80 a year if you would rather not pay once.
Cons
- Lifetime includes one year of updates, then an optional yearly fee.
- The homepage and the terms disagree on currency, device count and the update fee, so confirm before buying.
- No standing free plan, only a 7-day trial, and we found no money-back guarantee beyond the EU withdrawal right in its terms.
7. Voicy
Best for: People who want a lifetime licence across Mac, Windows, Linux and Chrome, and accept cloud transcription
Voicy Lifetime is $260 once, with unlimited recording and unlimited personal devices per its pricing page, though its privacy policy mentions a 2-device limit (see cons). Subscriptions start at $8.49 a month.
Pros

- A Team plan at $6.79 per user per month, with a minimum of 3 users.
Cons
- The highest one-time dictation price on this list.
- Transcription is cloud-based: audio is sent to the Groq API, and its own comparison table marks offline mode as not available.
- The only free option is a 30-minute trial of recording time.
- 'Unlimited' has limits: above 40 hours of transcription a month may prompt contact or suspension, and its privacy policy says accounts used on more than 2 devices may be terminated.
