How it works
1. Add Pepys to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. One click, no host permissions.
2. Open any video, podcast, or audio page – YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or any audio or video link on the web.
3. Click the Pepys icon. Pepys opens the link, asks you to create or sign in to a free account, then transcribes it. The toolbar button or the right-click menu both start a transcript of whatever you are watching or listening to.
What the extension asks for
Only the URL of the tab you are on, and only at the moment you click the button – Chrome's activeTab permission. The extension has no host permissions, reads no page content, and collects nothing in the background. It simply opens Pepys with that link.
It is built for Chrome and also works in Chromium-based browsers such as Edge, Brave, and Arc. In any other browser, pepys.co itself does the same job.
What you get in the transcript
The spoken language is detected automatically and you can translate the finished transcript into another language. Interviews, meetings, and podcasts come back with speaker labels, so you get who-said-what instead of one undivided wall of text.
An AI summary and the key moments are generated alongside the transcript, so an hour of audio can be grasped in a minute. The transcript chat answers questions with cited timestamps you can click to jump straight to that moment.
Everything exports in TXT, Markdown, DOCX, PDF, SRT, VTT, and JSON – SRT and VTT for players that need timed captions.
Good to know
The extension is free and creating a Pepys account is free: signing up from the extension grants 120 minutes of transcription with no card required, double the usual 60-minute starter grant. After that it is pay-as-you-go – you only pay for the minutes you transcribe, and credits never expire. See credits and free minutes.
