Captioning Japanese is its own craft, because the writing itself decides whether a line is readable. With no spaces between words, cues have to break where the sentence naturally pauses rather than mid-phrase, and each line has to stay short enough to take in at a glance – Japanese characters carry a lot of meaning per glyph, so an over-stuffed cue is unreadable. Pepys handles the segmentation and the kanji choices for you: it sorts run-on speech into clean lines, leans on context so homophones land on the right characters, and writes content words in kanji while keeping particles in kana.
It follows regional speech too – Kansai-ben, Hakata-ben and other accents come through rather than getting forced into 標準語 – and it keeps keigo politeness intact, which matters for anything client-facing or formal.
