Around 85 million people speak Turkish, and almost nobody speaks it the way a textbook does. The İstanbul standard sits next to broad Anatolian vowels, clipped Black Sea speech, and the Turkish of Cyprus and the German diaspora – and a recording rarely warns you which one is coming. The thing that breaks ordinary speech models on Turkish is the language itself. It is agglutinative, so a single root grows a tail of suffixes – evlerimizden, görüşemeyeceğiz – and the model has to spell the whole stack, not guess at the stem. Then there is the i that makes or breaks a word: dotted i and dotless ı, capital İ and capital I, all four distinct letters.
